How does Temu's one-free-return rule work?

Temu's headline — 90 days to return most items — is generous. The detail that catches people out is per order: the first return from each order is free, and any further return from that same order costs $7.99. Electronics windows can be shorter (45, 60 or 90 days, depending on the seller), and once you start a return you have 14 days to send it.

The practical trick follows from the rule: if you're unsure about several items, bundle them into one return from the same order rather than sending them back one by one. And if you think you'll return a lot, split risky items across separate orders.

Verdict: Batch your returns. Two separate returns from one order cost $7.99; one combined return costs nothing.

Why Temu stopped shipping from China to US customers

When the US closed its $800 duty-free allowance for Chinese goods in May 2025, Temu's model — small parcels sent straight from China — stopped working for American buyers. Temu announced it would stop selling goods from China directly to US customers; orders would instead be handled by locally based sellers and fulfilled from within the country. By July 2025 the same local-seller programme had expanded to the UK, France, Italy, Japan, Mexico and Australia.

Temu's scale made the change significant: by December 2024 its global app had more monthly active users than Amazon's, and it served around 30 million daily US users in March 2024, according to Wikipedia. For a buyer, the result is a different Temu depending on where you live: more local stock and faster delivery in some markets, a narrower range in others. Temu has also faced scrutiny in Europe: the European Commission opened a Digital Services Act investigation in October 2024, and preliminary findings in July 2025 said Temu was breaking EU rules by failing to prevent the sale of illegal products.

What people search for on Temu — and why it isn't there

Google's suggestions for "temu spreadsheet" include "reps", "designer", "shoes" and "clothes". Most of that intent can't be met on Temu. Temu's catalogue is built around mass-market, unbranded and own-brand goods, and it has been under EU pressure over illegal listings. Spreadsheets promising "designer finds on Temu" are usually lists of lookalike styles — similar shapes and colours, without the details people are actually hunting for.

Getting the most from a Temu order

If Temu is the right place for part of your list, a few habits make it smoother. Group items you're unsure about into one order, so that a single free return covers them all. Choose a refund to your original payment method rather than Temu credit if you might not shop there again; credit is faster but only spends on Temu. Check each listing's return eligibility before buying, since clothing that has been worn or washed, items with removed tags and personal-care products can't go back. Finally, look at the seller name on each listing: since the local-seller programme began, two near-identical items can come from different sellers with different delivery times and return handling. And keep in mind that in the US, stock now comes from local sellers, so delivery times and ranges may differ from the Temu you knew in 2024.
