How is GST charged on a parcel from China to Australia?

Since July 1, 2018, overseas sellers and platforms that sell goods of A$1,000 or less to Australian consumers collect GST at the point of sale, according to the Australian Taxation Office. For agent parcels, that usually means GST appears on your shipping or order bill rather than as a charge when the parcel lands.

Worked example with our landed-cost estimator: A$120 of goods plus A$30 shipping adds A$15 GST, for A$165 landed — A$41.25 per item across four items. Unlike the EU, the number of product categories doesn't change the bill.

Verdict: For Sydney buyers, GST is predictable and upfront. Keep parcels under A$1,000 and there's rarely anything to pay at the door.

Taobao ships to Australia directly — do you still need an agent?

Australia is on Taobao's official overseas shipping list, alongside Canada, New Zealand, Singapore and a handful of others, and was among the countries in Taobao's 2025 free-shipping push. For plain Taobao and Tmall items, buying direct can be simpler. But Taobao's own shipping doesn't cover Weidian or 1688 listings — where most spreadsheet finds live — gives you no QC photos before dispatch, and is strict about branded goods and batteries. Who delivers agent parcels in Sydney?

Most agent lines to Australia finish with Australia Post; express lines may use couriers such as DHL or FedEx. For Sydney deliveries:

• Parcel lockers are a good option if you're out during the day; add the locker details exactly as Australia Post provides them.
• Unit numbers should go at the start of the address in the format Australian systems expect (for example 5/12 Example St).
• Biosecurity rules are strict: wood, seeds, soil and some natural materials can be held for inspection. Clothing and shoes rarely cause problems, but avoid packing materials like straw.
